Taking a nice afternoon stroll along Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach, Florida, you may stumble across this historic courthouse. Built in Classic Revival style of architecture the building has been a landmark in Nassau County for over 100 years.

With a prominent stance in Fernandina Beach, this building is a must see if you are exploring the downtown area. Just a few beautiful blocks from the shores of the Amelia River, this historic building offers wonderful photo opportunities as well a glimpse into the local areas past.

History

Commonly recognized as the “Old Nassau County Courthouse”, the historic landmark has a important place in the history of Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Built in 1891, it cost over $20,000 to construct the two-story building. The offices served as a workplace for employees and officials of Nassau County. Its importance in the local city contributed to the community feel of downtown Fernandina Beach. The two Corinthian columns that extend on each level of the front exterior of the building are made from cast iron.

Atop the building is the detailed clock tower with a bell placed inside the steeple. The bell inside was once used as a fire alarm for residents of the local area.

The building was restored to its current state in 2002 and is still used for offices today.
