Have you always dreamed of experiencing the northern lights? How about watching the amazing Aurora Borealis swirl its colors in the nighttime sky? Alaska is one of the best places in the world to find this stunning natural occurrence.

Why it Happens

The Aurora Borealis occurs usually in the sky closest to the Northern and Southern poles. Since Alaska is very close to the North Pole, it is one of the top places people have credited to having the unusual light phenomenon. It is a natural occurrence of electrical charges that give the sky a green, red or pink swaying color band.

When to Visit

The best time of year to experience the northern lights is, of course, in the winter. During the winter months you will have the best chance of enjoying the Aurora Borealis.

The best months to visit are November to March for the highest odds of seeing the lights during your trip. Although the lights can occur all year long, March is the peak month to experience these lights as the days are longest.
