Mobile’s Beautiful Cathedral Basilica of Immaculate Conception
Once the first Catholic Parish on the Gulf Coast, the Cathedral Basilica of Immaculate Conception stands as a symbol of Mobile’s long-standing religious history. This congregation dates back to 1703.
With the congregation being in service for over 300 years, the Cathedral Basilica of Immaculate Conception has a lot of history. The current building was designed and constructed in the mid-1800s. It took nearly two decades to complete due to resources and economic conditions.
After it was constructed it served Mobile with a very large congregation. During World War II a pilot from a nearby base was training and accidently hit the top of one of the cathedral towers. This resulted in repairs needed to be made.
Violet Sky’s Visit
This cathedral has so much detail that it looks beautiful. Just imagining the amount of time and dedication put into constructing this place of worship is very intriguing. I also found it interesting to learn about how the cathedral grew to be so large and important in the city of Mobile.
How to Visit
While this is still a functioning cathedral, photos in front of the place are free! The Cathedral Basilica of Immaculate Conception is located at 2 S. Claiborne Street in downtown Mobile.
